AI courses on Udemy are really two separate catalogues, and most buyers open the wrong one. One track teaches you to work with models that already exist, no maths required. The other is machine learning and neural networks from the inside: Python and several months. Below are seven courses sorted into those two tracks, with ratings, lengths and update dates as of 5 September 2026.
AI courses come in two different catalogues
Udemy's search doesn't separate the tracks, and the general Artificial Intelligence topic page is a shop window for both subjects at once. The same word covers a four-hour introduction to generative models and a forty-nine-hour machine learning course: both are on the shortlist below.
The difference isn't difficulty. It's subject matter:
- The practical track — you are the user of a model. Prompting, assistants inside real work, generating text and images, and at the far end building applications on models somebody else trained — programming only enters there.
- The fundamentals track — you are the author of a model. Regression, classification, neural networks, training them and judging how well they work: Python, maths at least to school level, several months.
So the first question isn't "which course is best", but whether you want the model to work for you or to understand how it works. Answer that and half this shortlist is gone.
One criterion the general checklist doesn't have
The usual marks of a good course — a high rating across many ratings, a detailed curriculum, recent reviews — are in the checklist for choosing a Udemy course. One item gets added here, specific to the subject: the generation of models the course was filmed on.
A prompting course filmed on the generation of models before last goes stale all the way through — techniques it presents as mandatory, newer models now handle by themselves, and some examples work around limits that no longer exist.
You check that on the course page, not by the update date: the What you'll learn box and the curriculum name the models — the date says something changed, the names say what. All six English-language courses below were updated between April and July 2026.
One more check on the course page. Udemy requires instructors to disclose AI use in the course description, and does not accept entirely AI-generated courses: AI may aid an instructor, never replace their expertise. The terms are in Udemy's course quality checklist on the use of AI.
The practical track: working with models that already exist
No course here asks for programming going in — except the last, which says so itself. The order runs shortest to longest, not best to worst.
Generative AI for Beginners
4.5 across 127,373 ratings, 4 h 27 min, updated 4/2026. The only pick Udemy labels Beginner — the other six are All Levels. By review count it is the top result on the "generative ai" search.
The curriculum is the vocabulary of the subject: what a large language model is, embeddings, prompt engineering, fine-tuning, a simple chatbot at the end. The credited instructor is not a person but a studio account, Aakriti E-Learning Academy.
Who it's for
Anyone who hasn't decided which track they want: an evening on the vocabulary costs less than getting a fifty-hour course wrong.
The Complete Prompt Engineering for AI Bootcamp (2026)
4.5 across 160,939 ratings, 17 h 58 min, updated 5/2026, with a Bestseller badge — checked on 5 September 2026, and badges rotate. The instructors are Mike Taylor and James Phoenix. By review count it is the top result on the "prompt engineering" search.
It doubles as a worked example of the model-generation check: its What you'll learn box names ChatGPT, GPT-5, Midjourney, GitHub Copilot and Veo3 outright. And it hands you a method rather than ready-made prompts — how to frame a task, judge the answer, get the result repeatably. A little Python at the end scales that with a script.
Who it's for
Anyone who wants a repeatable method rather than recipes off social media. There are no stated prerequisites, but the last part goes easier if you have seen Python.
ChatGPT: Complete ChatGPT Course For Work 2026 (Ethically)!
4.5 across 130,583 ratings, 18 h 25 min, updated 7/2026 — the most recent date among the English-language picks. The instructor is Steve Ballinger. By review count it is the top result on the "artificial intelligence" search.
The URL still says 2023 and that tells you nothing: a Udemy link doesn't change after publication, and the page shows a July 2026 update and names ChatGPT 5 in its What you'll learn box.
Who it's for
A professional who is never going to write code and wants a few hours of the week back: a marketer, a manager, a team lead.
AI Engineer Core Track: LLM Engineering, RAG, QLoRA, Agents
4.7 across 40,841 ratings, 33 h 27 min, updated 6/2026, by Ed Donner and Ligency. The title lists a stack rather than topics to survey: LLM engineering, RAG, QLoRA fine-tuning, agents. The curriculum is built around projects, among them a multi-modal agent and a RAG assistant over a knowledge base.
To be straight: 40,841 ratings is a quarter of the prompting course's and a fifth of Machine Learning A-Z's, so this is not a well-known course. Its strength is the newest stack here, and being the only pick that builds a product on models rather than using them.
The course states its prerequisite itself: familiarity with Python. It doesn't teach the basics and is taught entirely in Python, so All Levels misleads here.
Who it's for
A developer who already writes Python and wants to ship AI features, not to work through gradient descent.
The fundamentals track: training models, not prompting them
There is an entry requirement here you cannot skip: both courses below are taught in Python and neither teaches it. They assume you read code without tripping over loops, functions and imports.
If that isn't true yet, the order is the opposite of the one that feels logical: language first, models second. Machine Learning A-Z [2026]: ML, DL, AI with AWS, Python & R
The largest course here by audience: 205,873 ratings at 4.5, 49 h 14 min, updated 6/2026, with a Bestseller badge as of 5 September 2026. The instructors are Kirill Eremenko, Hadelin de Ponteves and the SuperDataScience and Ligency teams.
The title carries three subjects at once — machine learning, deep learning and AI — and the code runs in Python and R. The level reads All Levels, but the course states its requirement directly: high-school mathematics. Forty-nine hours is a programme of several months, not a weekend.
Who it's for
Anyone who wants to build and train models rather than prompt finished ones. The bigger the audience, the better the odds your question was already asked in the Q&A.
Deep Learning A-Z [2026]: DL, AI in Python & AWS + LLM Prize
4.6 across 49,913 ratings, 23 h 6 min, updated 6/2026. Same authoring team and same A-Z format as the course above: not two independent options but a sequence, machine learning first, neural networks after.
Of everything here it is the only course about neural networks in the narrow, technical sense: supervised and unsupervised learning, artificial neural networks, computer vision, time series.
Who it's for
Anyone who has finished a machine learning course and wants neural networks in more depth. It is half the length of the previous one, but skipping the fundamentals is a bad idea.
The one serious AI course in Russian
The Russian-language part of the catalogue is thin here. On the search for "нейросети" with the Russian-language filter, sorted by review count, the top places on 5 September 2026 went to a Figma course and a Photoshop course — neural networks as a tool, not the subject. The largest Russian course actually about them had 121 ratings.
Against that background there is exactly one serious option, from the fundamentals track.
Машинное обучение в Python: Machine Learning & Data Science
4.7 across 864 ratings, 50 h 44 min, updated 7/2026, taught in Russian. The instructors are Jose Portilla, Vlad Burmistrov and Pierian Training.
About those figures: 864 ratings against Machine Learning A-Z's 205,873 is roughly 240 times fewer. It carries no Bestseller badge, and comparing it on review count with the English-language leaders is pointless. It is here for one reason: it is the only serious option in Russian — fifty hours, recently updated.
Who it's for
Anyone for whom 49 hours of English lectures is out of reach and who wants the fundamentals. The practical track has no Russian equivalent of comparable size.

Buying and redeeming a course from Russia
Udemy doesn't take Russian-issued cards directly, but the course can still be bought officially — as a gift. Paste the course link into the form on the ForUdemy homepage, check the price in rubles, and pay by card, SBP or cryptocurrency: the gift code usually arrives within a couple of minutes. One condition matters more than the payment: the key only redeems in a Udemy account that was not created in Russia. Paying needs no VPN; redeeming does. If your account is tied to Russia, set one up in advance. Redemption errors are covered in how to redeem a Udemy gift code.
Check the account before you pay, not after. Sign in to the account you intend to use, open any paid course page in a browser (not the mobile app), and look at the currency of the price. Rubles mean the account is tied to Russia and the code won't work in it. Any other currency — dollars, euros, zloty — shows no ruble tie, but doesn't prove the account's country either.
